Is Breakfast a Key to Weight Management?

You know the old adage, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day!”  Is it true?  What’s been your experience?  I often wake up hungry and ready to eat within a short time, but I know some people aren’t like that.  Should they eat anyway?  I’ve never been a proponent of people eating when they aren’t hungry, but…

  • Research shows that 78% of people who lost at least 30 pounds and maintain that weight loss for at least a year are regular breakfast eaters.
  • Eating breakfast in the morning helps provide (1) nutrients you need for energy to meet the day

Make your own or buy nutrient-dense smoothies like this one* for quick breakfast on the go.

and (2) satisfies you until your next eating episode – usually lunch.  This satiating effect could keep you from overeating at your next meal and might contribute to the previous bullet.

  • It’s a great way to help you meet your daily nutrition needs, provided you choose nutrient-rich foods.  As opposed to donuts, giant bagels loaded with cream cheese, or chocolate cereal (sorry).

So, if you love breakfast like me – awesome, eat up.  If you’re not really a “breakfast person” consider making a change.  Breakfast need not be complicated or time consuming.  I like smoothies on days when I don’t have time to sit and eat a full meal.  I make my own (check for a recipe later this week) or sometimes drink a purchased product like the B’more* Organic Skyr Smoothie (just 200 calories and >30g protein/bottle).  Whole wheat

Full Breakfast

Scrambled eggs with baby kale and cheese, whole wheat bagel thin and turkey bacon.

mini-bagels and bagel thins are also great for quick breakfast. I will pair them with peanut butter, a banana, and eat it at the counter or take it with me.  When I have time for a full breakfast, I love to make scrambled eggs with cheese and veggies (eggs are the perfect place to sneak in some additional veggies!) and turkey bacon with some sort of bread.  BTW, both eggs and bread are totally allowed on a healthy, delicious diet, right?  We all know that by now, right?

Are you a breakfast eater?  Or do you frequently skip breakfast?  I’d love to hear your go-to breakfast ideas!  You can also often see a peek at my plate by following me on Instagram. xo

*B’more Organic sent me some coupons for free product, but did not pay me for this post or any other promotion.  I really like the product because it’s nutritionally sound, tastes great, and is super convenient.  There are also some other brands that are great – look for high protein, low sugar (B’more Organics don’t have added sugar, but do have stevia), and <300 calories.
